Faith Formation for All Ages

Our Faith Formation (Christian Education) classes have gotten off to a good start this year. Our teachers volunteer their time and talents to give our children and youth a positive experience in a loving and caring setting. The goal is to provide a wide variety of programmed activities designed to enable spiritual growth and faith development, thus creating the building blocks of faith which will remain with them throughout their lives.

We will continue with the Chapel Time for children this year. Each Sunday following the Children's Time in the worship service the children will go to the Chapel for 10-15 minutes together. During the Chapel Time, we will introduce the scripture lesson for the day, celebrate birthdays and special accomplishments, collect a Children's offering, and learn about the elements of worship. Sunday School classes will dismiss at 11:45 am each week. The Children's offering will go to the Common Cents Fund and our special Mission Projects. This year's Sunday School staff includes:

Children's Sabbath Events

This year KCC will observe Children's Sabbath on October 18.

The National Observance of Children's Sabbath is an annual, multi-faith holiday that celebrates children as sacred gifts of the Divine, and provides the opportunity for communities of faith to renew and live out their moral responsibility to care, protect and advocate for all children. This year's theme, entitled, When Will We Hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Call to End Poverty in America? focuses on answering Dr. King's call to build and be the blessed community where all children can live out their God-given potential.

Light a Candle for Children is an advocacy and prayer vigil project that invites congregations to join in Forty Days of Prayer for Children. It begins forty days prior to the national observance of Children's Sabbath.

The needs of the world's children should be a priority for all of us as individuals, groups and communities of faith. Not all of us have been afforded the gift of working directly with children, but none of our lives has escaped the touch of a child in some special way. The United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) invite you to join in praying for a brighterfuture for all of God's children.

The Board of Christian Education at Kirkland Congregational Church will be sponsoring this prayer vigil project. We will ask participants to light candles and pray for children on each of the forty days from September 9 to October 18.

Each participant will be asked to select a day and a place at home, work, etc to set aside a time during the day to reflect on the needs and gifts of children; light a candle and offer a prayer or share in a moment of silence remembering all children; and if possible, keep the candle lit and visible throughout the day as a reminder of children's needs and gifts. We want to include the children and youth of Kirkland Congregational Church, United Church of Christ each day in our prayers as well. You will receive a special prayer booklet with their names for each of the 40 Days of Prayer.

Remember, we can and should make a difference where the needs, hopes and dreams of children are involved. Let the candle of their lives inspire you and light your pathway as you advocate on their behalf.

...and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 11:6

Toothbrush Collection

We will collect toothbrushes and toothpaste on Children's Sabbath, October 18, 2009. Please watch for special sale prices and/or when you visit your dentist during the summer, ask for a donation of toothbrushes or toothpaste. Note: we need the toothbrushes to be individually wrapped -many of the sets of 4 or 6+ toothbrushes can not be separated and still keep the toothbrush completely sealed. This is a health safety issue.

Our Next Monthly Mission Project:
Back to School Supplies

Watch for information about the August Mission Project of collecting "Back to School" supplies, a project of KIN. Specific items needed and collection dates will be announced soon. Naomi and Henry Lombard, our KIN representatives, will keep you informed. Volunteers to sort and hand out the supplies in mid-August will be needed as well.
