Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts; praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet; praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance; praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals; praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord!~ Psalm 150
Yes, and here at Kirkland Congregational we might add "Praise him with the recorder, praise him with the harmonica, praise him with the saxophone, praise him with drums and clapping, praise him with humorous songs and laughing, praise him with puppets and stories, praise him with gospel songs and piano."
Religious Music Week is an interfaith movement seeking to be a catalyst in encouraging congregations to build upon the ministry of music, attracting men and women from all walks of life to a saving knowledge of God and leading them to a fuller, more rewarding religious life. It was founded in 1995 under the sponsorship of "A Taste of Gospel Music," which brought together more than 50 churches of all denominations in Southwestern Ohio.
Many well-known musical luminaries have been appointed to their National Advisory Board, including Dr. Carl P. Daw, Jr., Executive Director of The Hymn Society of America. An Episcopal priest, his poetry is found in most contemporary hymnals, including nine hymns in The New Century Hymnal and eleven hymns in The Hymnbook 1982 of the Episcopal Church.
Sunday, September 23, will be proclaimed "Choir Sunday" and the Choir will perform an eclectic program of music encompassing many styles and centuries of religious music. The ministry of music is an essential part of our religious life. Through song, we worship the Lord, our God. We give thanks, we ask for blessing, we renew our faith, and we express the joy of Christian fellowship. You are encouraged to be present on this special Sunday and extend thanks and recognition to these musicians who provide the music for worship services throughout the year, who have included the following:
|
Mark Adams Rich Baldwin Char Bates Lee Bates Dottie Blair Leah Boris Walter John Boris Gerhard Dieckmann Barbara Dietrich |
Ernest Dietrich |
Annie Richardson-Lander Richard Lander Joanne Barrie Lynn Cindy Penn Pam Chang Rice Pat Rice Jerry Rutherford Barbara Thomas Diane Wilson |
If you sing in the shower but would perhaps like a more satisfying way to sing, the Choir and I extend an invitation to join us. Rehearsals are held from 7:30 - 9 PM on Thursday evenings in the sanctuary. On Sunday, there is a 45-minute rehearsal before the service. So, for approximately a two-hour participation each week you will be surprising your friends and neighbors, enriching your own life, pleasing other Choir members, and delighting God. Not every Choir member is able to attend every rehearsal or every service. We live in busy times and understand that life gets complicated. But for the joy of communal effort, we all think it's worth it when we can make it. Think about it!
