We have all heard the saying, “The only permanent thing is change,” a paraphrase of an old Greek adage by Heraclitus, “Nothing endures but change.” However you say it, a change is coming to Choir activities at Kirkland Congregational Church. For many years (at least in my ten years here) Choir rehearsal has been held on Thursday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. For most of that time, it worked and was a good thing. We built family, a group who share each others’ joys, triumphs, travels, challenges; we blend and pray and sing together. As time has moved us all forward, it has become apparent that an evening rehearsal is becoming less and less workable. The reasons are varied: those in retirement wishing to travel, escalating gas prices for some on fixed incomes, longer distances for some to come to church, reluctance of some to drive at night, children’s school programs which conflict, other obligations, etc.
Therefore: The Choir has decided to meet for rehearsalsonly on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m., beginning on October 2, 2005. Thursday evening rehearsals are cancelled after September 29.
Finding choral music appropriate for scriptural themes and available voices has always been a special challenge and will become even more so under this new plan. But it is also something I love to do. Music reaches places in the human soul that is untouchable by any other means. I will endeavor to find uplifting music that will reach those places without as much practice time! Creating music is as much a privilege as it is a joy. Come and sing for the joy of it, sing because it feels good to sing and give back to God and community the gift of music, come and sing because something in you is calling you to do it. (If you prefer to sit with your family during the church service, we have no objection.)
