Faith Formation Committee
January 2008 Report to the Congregation
Faith formation is a life-long process, and KCC's Board of Christian Education oversees programs that
take our members from the nursery through childhood and youth classes and on into adult education.
The Board of Christian Education's primary function is the administration of the church's faith formation
programs. To this end we monitor curriculum materials and recruit teachers. We lead classes for young
children, middle-school aged children, and junior and senior high school youth. Not only do we hold
classes during the regular school year, but we consistently have a well-structured program to take us
through the summer months as well.
We also support the teaching of adult education classes, and the past year saw high participation rates
in Living the Questions, Saving Jesus, and The Heart of Christianity. The Board of Christian Education
is the church's liaison to various community welfare agencies, and as such is responsible for planning
the monthly mission projects. These range from collecting warm hats and gloves for the residents of
Tent City 4 to donating birthday supplies to Hopelink, to buying Christmas gifts and filling food baskets
for families sponsored by KITH. Part of our mission is to bring our classroom experiences to the
congregation, and some of the ways we do that include organizing the Christmas Pageant, the Epiphany
service, Lenten activities, and the youth-led Easter Sunrise Service.
We also sponsor many fun activities throughout the year, including the Halloween party, the Easter egg
hunt, and the barbecues that start and end our official church year. We are in the second year of holding
film viewing and discussion evenings the first Friday of every month (October – June).
A few of 2007's accomplishments:
- Well over 50 people participating in adult education classes (Living the Questions, Saving Jesus, and The Heart of Christianity)
- A broader cultural experience for the church through the use of the play "Pedro, Angel of Olvera Street" as the basis of our Christmas pageant
- Raising over $200 that was donated to Tent City 4 for food and supplies for the camp
- Providing scholarships for church members going to summer camp
- Drawing in members of the congregation to celebrate children through the Children's Sabbath candles
- A significantly updated email list to bring more of our members into electronic communications with the church
